If baptism has nothing to do with taking away your sins, why does it have anything to do with a good conscience?  Because if you were saved before the baptism, then you would already have the good conscience.  But if it does have something to do with God destroying my sins, then it makes sense it would be an appeal to God for a good conscience when I'm baptized.
